*-- Disapproval rating for Congress at 78 percent; gridlock cited most --*

PRINCETON, N.J. - More than three-fourths of Americans say they disapprove of the way Congress is doing its job, a Gallup poll released Wednesday indicated.

Results indicated 78 percent gave a thumbs-down, the 45th straight month at least two-thirds of Americans voiced negative feelings about Congress.

The top reason given by poll respondents who expressed displeasure with Congress is partisan gridlock, cited by 28 percent, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said. Another 21 percent cited Congress' failure to accomplish anything or make decisions while 11 percent said Congress puts party politics ahead of the country.

Seventeen percent of Americans polled by Gallup said they approve of the job Congress is doing.

The most common response was Congress was doing a good job or is getting better, mentioned by 15 percent. Another 9 percent said Congress was working better across party lines and 7 percent praised at least one party for "trying."

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 1,529 adults conducted June 1-4. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
