*-- Obama won't take executive action on immigration until after elections --*

WASHINGTON (UPI) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Saturday delayed executive action on immigration until after congressional mid-term elections in November.

The president had told reporters at the end of a NATO summit in Whales on Friday that he had intended to take action on reshaping the United States' immigration system without congressional approval before November.

The decision not to take action sooner is a reversal of Obama's vow in June to move forward on immigration reform before the end of the summer after the House said it wouldn't vote on a bill this year.

White House officials said executive action could anger conservatives across the country and could hamper Democratic efforts to retain control of the Senate during the mid-term elections.

"Because of the Republicans' extreme politicization of this issue, the president believes it would be harmful to the policy itself and to the long-term prospects for comprehensive immigration reform to announce administrative action before the elections," a White House official said. "Because he wants to do this in a way that's sustainable, the president will take action on immigration before the end of the year."
