*-- Obama picks ex-Pentagon official to replace Hagel as defense secretary --*

WASHINGTON (UPI) - President Barack Obama has named former Pentagon official Ashton Carter as the new Secretary of Defense to replace Chuck Hagel, the White House confirmed Friday.

Carter has bachelor's degrees in physics and medieval history from Yale University and a doctorate in theoretical physics from Oxford University. He was a Rhodes Scholar, as well.

He served as deputy defense secretary from October 2011 to December 2013. His policy ideas seem to be in line with Obama's focus on making partnerships with Asia and fighting cyber crime and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

"First of all, we need to get back to some issues that we've taken our eye off a little bit over the last decade," Carter said. "We need to reinvest and get back in the game."

He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate for his position as deputy secretary. His confirmation this time around looks good, as well, with both Republicans and Democrats stating their support for Carter.
