*-- Hillary Clinton speaks on Ferguson: 'We are better than that' --*

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) - Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton weighed in on the the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Mo., saying "We are better than that."

Speaking at an event in San Francisco, the potential 2016 presidential candidate said a United States where one-third of African-American males will go to prison in their lifetime is a country that needs to change its reality.

"Behind the dramatic, terrible pictures on television are deep challenges that will be with them and with us long after the cameras move on. This is what happens when the bonds of trust and respect that hold any community together fray. Nobody wants to see our streets look like a war zone. Not in America. We are better than that."

Clinton had been criticized for her silence immediately following the shooting on August 9. Brown was unarmed when he was gunned down.

"We can do better. We cannot ignore the inequalities that exist in our justice system, inequalities that undermine our most deeply held values of fairness and equality," she added.
