Greetings fellow Bizarros:Does it make sense to ban a crop in the United States that can have a large, positive economic and environmental impact and is completely harmless? No. And that is exactly the position of the hemp advocates.
Because hemp is a relative of marijuana it is lumped by law into the illegal drug category. It is against the law to grow it, although products made from it can be imported from other countries.
It needs half the fertilizer required for wheat and less water to grow than cotton. It is used in the textile industry to make clothes, in the automotive industry instead of fiberglass to make things like car door panels, it is used in the housing industry for insulation materials and a mix of lime and hemp used as a building material is cheaper and stronger than concrete and has huge insulating value.
Paper made from hemp is more durable and easier to bleach than wood pulp, and hemp plants can reach a harvestable state within four months, unlike trees which take at least a decade to grow mature enough.
Hemp can produce cooking oil, lubricating oil, body and massage oils, soaps; quite literally about a thousand different products. But perhaps most importantly hemp is an ideal raw material for biofuel. Why are we turning food into fuel when hemp produces more and a better fuel?
The growing of hemp in Great Britain was legalized in 1993 and since then it has becoming a booming industry, just like in Canada, France and a number of other countries. Why is the United States not competing?
Are lawmakers so backward thinking that they cannot differentiate between marijuana and hemp? Or is it some bizarre conspiracy involving the billion dollar textiles industry? Somebodies must be getting paid a mint to keep hemp suppressed, because it seems a crime on several levels not to exploit this wonder crop.
Bizarrely,

(Even More 'Bizarre March Holidays' Next Issue)*-- Thermometer has been in lung for 44 years --*CHANGSHA, China - Doctors in China said they are trying to figure out how they will remove a thermometer that has been inside a woman's lung for 44 years. The Hunan province doctors said they found the 2-inch-long medical thermometer in the lungs of a patient identified only as Liu and she told them she accidentally swallowed the object when she was 12-years-old and her family couldn't afford medical care, MSNBC.com reported Thursday. Doctors said the woman only recently began to feel discomfort from the thermometer and they are concerned about the damage the mercury could do to the woman's body if the glass breaks.
*-- Deer rescues woman from attack --*OXFORD, Ohio - Police in Ohio said a startled deer became an accidental hero when it scared off a man who was attempting to choke a woman and drag her away. Oxford Police Sgt. Jon Varley said the woman left a party early Sunday in the 500 block of Poplar Street and a man "tried to choke her and drag her" by her purse straps and "told her to be quiet," The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Thursday. Varley said a deer that was apparently sleeping nearby suddenly jumped up and started running, causing the assailant to become spooked and flee. Varley said the woman suffered red marks and bruising from being choked and punched in the forehead but did not require medical treatment.
*-- READER COMMENTS --*how about limiting welfare parents (mothers) funding to the children you already have, but not for anymore.
[
I don't know if China has a welfare system like that.]
As far as Chinese birth control goes, my favorite slogan is: Before you attack her, wrap that wacker. -Dan
OMG, Lewis. Every winter we read about mishaps such as this as well as cases of drownings when people fall through ice in lakes, rivers and ponds. How stupid are people or is it just ignorance? Perhaps school science classes should teach a few simple facts that could save lives not to mention damage to vehicles.
Lewis, another unforeseen math result of the "One-child" policy is that if parents know that their unborn is a female they have been aborting. Now they have a higher rate of males to females which will further lessen the birth rate in the next few generations. -O'SURE
[
I read somewhere that historically, when a nation has too great of a male population it tends to want to start wars. Can you imagine 20,000,000 horny, armed Chinese guys?]
Without China's one child policy I wouldn't have a beautiful, wonderfully bright, granddaughter, and my grandson wouldn't have gotten to make a once in a lifetime trip to see China. My son and his family made the trip to china to adopt a beautiful daughter.
[
Congratulations.]
