Greetings fellow Bizarros:

Sure, certain European countries get a guaranteed eight weeks of vacation, but those are smelly, socialist Europeans. Here in the United States of America we earn our vacation the old fashioned way, by killing our children...on paper anyway.

A New York school employee forged a death certificate for her daughter to get a week's vacation to Costa Rica, city investigators said.

A recently released report said Joan Barnett, 58, a parent coordinator at the Manhattan High School of Hospitality Management, had one of her daughters call the school to say her sister had suffered a heart attack in Costa Rica.

The report said Barnett then had another daughter call to say the heart attack was fatal and the family was traveling to Costa Rica for the funeral. Barnett forged a death certificate for "Xinia Daley Herman" to meet the school system's requirement for bereavement days.

A school official became suspicious of the death certificate because it contained "slightly different fonts which were not aligned properly."

Costa Rican government officials confirmed the certificate was a fake and investigators determined Barnett had purchased her plane tickets three weeks prior to her trip.

Barnett was fired from the school and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor forgery.

Bizarrely,
Lewis

WASHINGTON - Thousands of train commuters in Washington, London, Toronto, Mexico City, Madrid and other cities rode the rails in their underpants for No Pants Day. The Sunday event, organized in Facebook by group Improv Everywhere, involved an estimated 16,000 people in 60 cities, AOL reported Monday. Other cities with participants included New York, Los Angeles and Tel Aviv, Israel. The Washington Post reported about 200 men and women participated on the city's Metro trains, and Britain's Sun newspaper said hundreds of pantless people took to the London Underground for what is known in the country as the No Trousers Tube Ride. The Sun said riders in Madrid were stopped by police when entering the planned starting station. "The purpose is to have fun and entertain people," said Dan Becherano, one of the event's organizers. "The purpose of flash mobs is to show how we can get together without knowing each other and work as teams without really having seen each other ahead of time. The most important thing will be the victims -- the reaction of people who aren't involved."

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Three suspects were arrested after allegedly stealing beer from a California convenience store -- then returning to sloppily erase their tracks, police say. Oscar Jimenez, 19, Eduardo Salgado, 18, and a juvenile whose name was not reported allegedly stole beer from Dooley's Liquor Store & Market in Santa Clarita about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Detectives allege they returned a half-hour later, drunk, and asked the clerk to hand over the surveillance video. Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Tom Bryski said "a scuffle ensued," KNBC-TV, Los Angeles, reported. One suspect allegedly brandished a knife and cut the store clerk on the arm. The clerk needed stitches. What would have been a misdemeanor theft charge suddenly became felony for assault with a deadly weapon. The three escaped, but were apprehended in short order, the TV station said.

Lewis, Unfortunately, playing porn while driving is not as rare as people think it is. I work rotating shifts and there are times I'm driving home late at night. Those DVD player screens are easily seen at night, even through window tinting. Nothing like pulling up beside a large SUV at a red light and seeing porn through their window! Is the urge really so urgent that you have to watch that in the car on the way home? -Lisa
[Could be. Have you heard talk radio lately?]

[All you need is a length of chain and a pad lock and you'll be ready for a date in Pennsylvania.]

Lewis, do you have any Best of Bizare News 1 left? -Steve
[I wish. That book sold out years ago. If I still had the original Quark file I layed the book out in I would publish it online. But it is all long gone. The Best of Bizarre News II is almost sold out. There are only maybe a hundred copies left. If you want one it is advertised right at the bottom of this page.]

Lewis, I don't think getting the police involved was such a stretch. My cousin once had two books that were more than a year overdue and a warrant was issued for his arrest. So maybe stealing library books is more of a serious crime than people think. -Chris
[I think it should come down to a dollar value. How much is petty theft and how much is felony theft?]
