Read about our staffGreetings!

You've probably seen sample budgets that include a "monthly clothing expense." That's wild. Unless your job requires a runway rotation, there's no need to shop for clothes every month.

The truth is, most of us already have more than enough. And when you take care of what you've got, even basics like socks and underwear can last all year (or longer).

Below are some simple habits to help you wear what you already own — and spend a lot less doing it.

Be Well,

Wash Less, Wear More

Unless something's dirty or smelly, it doesn't need to hit the laundry basket. Washing too often wears clothes out faster and runs up your utility bill. Give your washer a break.

Take Inventory Before You Shop

How many times have you bought a shirt, only to realize you already have two just like it? Before you shop, check your closet. There's a good chance you already own something that works just fine.

Mend It Instead of Replacing It

Lost button? Tiny tear? That doesn't mean the item is done for. Learn a few basic fixes or swing by a tailor. A five-dollar repair will always beat a fifty-dollar replacement.

Try A Clothing Swap

AnisapointThis one's fun. Get a few friends together and bring what you're tired of. You'll walk away with a "new-to-you" wardrobe — for free. It's a win-win and keeps clothes out of landfills, too.

Stick To A Color Palette

When everything in your closet works together, you can make more outfits from fewer items. You'll avoid one-off impulse buys and always have something that goes with something else.

In Closing...

Clothing is one of the easiest places to cut back without feeling like you're missing out. Start by shopping your own closet, and see how far a little creativity and care can take you.
