Read about our staffGreetings!

I can be a sucker for impulse buys. But I discovered something simple that changed my spending: the 72-hour rule.

It is at implies... just pause before buying. When I want to buy something that is not a true necessity, I wait three full days. During that time, I ask myself: Do I need it? Will it really add value? Or is it just a want in disguise?

More often than not, the urge passes and my bank account thanks me.

Let's look at three easy ways to make the rule work for you. Number three has become my favorite and it has an added benefit!

3 Ways to Make the 72-Hour Rule Work

1. Set a Price Threshold
Decide how much triggers the pause. For some, it is $25. For others, $100. Anything above that means you wait 72 hours before buying.

2. Write It Down
Keep a running list of what you are “waiting on.” Seeing it written down helps you see patterns in your wants versus needs.

3. Find a Substitute
Sometimes the urge to buy is really just boredom, stress, or curiosity. Go for a walk, cook what is already in your pantry, or finally use that gift card hiding in your drawer.

In Closing...

The 72-hour rule is not about deprivation. It is about clarity. After three days, if it still feels like a worthy purchase, buy it without guilt. But if the excitement has fizzled, you have just saved yourself money and clutter.

Did You Know?

The average American spends over $300 a month on impulse purchases. That is more than $3,500 a year gone on things we often forget we even bought.
