Anisa

Hello Neighbor!

My laundry room is small and had no place to hang clothes that I do not want to put into the dryer or hang the ones that I am folding.

I did not want to pay anyone to add shelving and a rod, so I grabbed a couple of plain shower curtain tension rod and wedged it in the empty spaces.

It holds a dozen hangers just fine and took about thirty seconds to set up. Below is how I do mine.

Be Well,

Turn A Spare Tension Rod Into An Instant Hanging Rack

A spring loaded tension rod, the same kind made for shower curtains, can hold a surprising amount of weight once it is wedged tightly between two walls, a floor and a shelf, or wall to wall in a closet corner.

How To Do It

  1. Pick an empty corner in a closet, mudroom, pantry, or laundry room that is at least a foot wide.
  2. Twist the tension rod open until it presses firmly against both surfaces at the height you want.
  3. Give it a firm tug to confirm it is wedged tight before hanging anything heavy on it.
  4. Hang coats, scarves, tote bags, or towels right on the rod like you would any closet rail.

More Ways To Use It

  • The same trick works under a bathroom sink for cleaning spray bottles, hung by their trigger handles.
  • A short tension rod across the inside of a cabinet door turns it into extra storage too.

ASK THE GENIUS

"Will a tension rod leave marks on my walls?"

A rubber or padded end cap protects paint and drywall from pressure marks, so look for a rod with rubber tips, or add a thin pad yourself before wedging it into place.

DID YOU KNOW?

A spring tension rod holds itself in place with outward pressure from an internal spring, not screws or adhesive, so most standard sizes hold about ten to fifteen pounds without slipping.

That is plenty for coats, scarves, and bags, just do not hang your heaviest winter coats on it all at once.
