Genius House Hacks - Smart Ideas for a Simpler, Happier Home

October 20, 2026

Anisa Hello Neighbor!

My porch had three empty terra cotta pots stacked in the corner all summer, leftover from tomato plants that did not make it past July.

I finally grabbed the smallest one to toss, then noticed the charger and cord sitting right next to it on my kitchen counter, tangled as usual.

I flipped the pot upside down over the charger and threaded the cord out through the drainage hole. My counter looked clean in about ten seconds. Below is how I did mine.

Be Well,
Anisa

Turn A Spare Flower Pot Into A Hidden Charging Station

An empty flower pot with a drainage hole is the easiest way to hide a charging brick and its cord without buying an organizer. Set it over the mess and your counter looks tidy again.

How To Do It

  1. Pick a flower pot big enough to cover your charger or a small power strip, with a drainage hole in the bottom.
  2. Plug the charger or power strip in and set it on the counter or table where you want it.
  3. Flip the pot upside down over it, threading the cord out through the drainage hole.
  4. Set your phone next to the pot to charge, the plug and cord stay tucked out of sight.

More Ways To Use It

  • A second pot, right side up, makes a sweet catch all for keys and mail by the door.
  • A larger pot works well as a small wastebasket liner for a home office desk.

ASK THE GENIUS

"Will hiding my charger under a pot make it overheat?"

A ceramic or terra cotta pot has plenty of airflow through the drainage hole, so a charging brick runs fine underneath one. Just skip any pot that seals tightly with no opening.

DID YOU KNOW?

Most phone chargers still pull a small trickle of power even when nothing is plugged into them.

Unplug chargers you are not using, or put them on a power strip with a switch, and you will trim a little off your electric bill.
