Should Your Iced Coffee Come to the Interview?
Picture this. You have a job interview at 9 a.m., you barely slept because you were nervous, and all you want is your favorite iced coffee to help you wake up. You grab one on the way and suddenly start wondering, “Can I actually bring this into my interview?” It might seem like a small detail, but when you are trying to make a great first impression, even your coffee can become something to think about.
So, is it okay to bring iced coffee to a job interview? Technically, yes, but it may be better to finish it before you walk through the door.
There is nothing inherently unprofessional about drinking coffee. In fact, your interviewer might have a coffee sitting on their desk. However, walking into an interview carrying a large iced coffee can create a more casual first impression. Depending on the workplace, that may not matter at all. If you are interviewing at a coffee shop, retail store, or laid-back workplace, nobody may think twice about it. A more formal office environment might be different.
There are also practical reasons to leave your drink behind. During an interview, you may already be carrying a resume, portfolio, purse, or other belongings. Adding a cup of coffee gives you one more thing to manage. You have to figure out where to put it, worry about spilling it, and decide when it is appropriate to take a sip. The last thing you want is to accidentally knock your drink over while reaching for your resume or shaking someone's hand.
Coffee can also be distracting. You might find yourself playing with the straw, shaking the ice, or taking a sip while the interviewer is asking you a question. Even if you do not realize you are doing it, small distractions can take attention away from the conversation.
There is a difference, however, between bringing your own drink and accepting one that is offered to you. If the interviewer asks if you would like coffee or water, it is completely reasonable to accept. Water is usually the easiest option because it can actually be helpful if your mouth gets dry while talking. Plus, you do not have to worry about coffee breath right before introducing yourself to a potential employer.
What if you absolutely need your morning caffeine? Enjoy your iced coffee before the interview. Give yourself enough time to finish it, throw the cup away, and freshen up before walking inside. That way, you still get your caffeine without having to carry the drink throughout the interview.
At the end of the day, bringing iced coffee probably will not determine whether you get the job. Your qualifications, personality, preparation, and answers matter much more. Still, interviews are all about making a strong first impression. When you are unsure about something as simple as bringing a drink, choosing the slightly more professional option is usually the safest choice. So, grab that iced coffee, enjoy every sip, and finish it before you head inside. Your coffee can give you the boost you need, but it does not need to come to the interview with you.
