Apple Unfolds a Whole New iPhone

For years, Apple fans have watched other smartphone companies experiment with foldable phones while the iPhone stuck with its familiar design. Well, Apple has officially decided it is time to join the foldable world. The company has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, and it might be one of the biggest changes to the iPhone we have seen in years.

The biggest attraction is obviously the screen. When the iPhone Duo is closed, you get a 5.4-inch outer display that works much like a traditional iPhone. Open it up, though, and you are looking at a much larger 7.6-inch display. That gives you considerably more room for watching videos, browsing the internet, playing games, or getting some work done. Apple says the inner screen is 50 percent larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both screens also feature ProMotion with refresh rates up to 120Hz.

The larger display is not just about making everything bigger. Apple redesigned parts of iOS 27 to take advantage of the extra space. One of the coolest additions is Split View, which lets you run two apps side by side. Imagine watching a video while texting someone, checking your calendar while reading an email, or comparing two websites without constantly switching back and forth. You can even save pairs of apps that you frequently use together.

Of course, Apple also packed plenty of power inside. The iPhone Duo uses Apple's A20 Pro chip, the same chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple paired it with a new cooling system and dual-battery design to handle gaming, multitasking, and Apple Intelligence features. The phone also introduces the new Siri AI experience, which is designed to be more conversational and capable of using personal context to help users.

The camera system is impressive, although serious photographers may still prefer the iPhone 18 Pro. The Duo has two 48-megapixel rear cameras, including Main and Ultra Wide cameras, with up to 2x optical-quality zoom. Its folding design also creates some interesting possibilities. Duo Preview, for example, can show the person you are photographing a live preview on the outer screen while you take the picture.

There are a few surprises. Instead of Face ID, the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button. It also supports the USB-C Apple Pencil, making that huge inner screen even more useful for taking notes, drawing, or marking up documents.

Then there is the price. The iPhone Duo starts at a whopping $1,999 for 256GB of storage, so this definitely is not going to be an impulse purchase for most people. Preorders begin October 16, and the phone officially becomes available October 23.

Still, the iPhone Duo feels like more than another yearly iPhone upgrade. Apple is taking the familiar iPhone experience and completely changing what the device can physically do. The big question is whether people are ready to spend nearly $2,000 for an iPhone that folds. For Apple fans who have been waiting years for something truly different, the Duo may finally be the iPhone they have been waiting for.
