My car door took a beating from my garage wall before I figured out this trick, and it cost me about five dollars to fix.
A basic foam pool noodle, split down the middle, cushions anything it touches. I use it in the garage, and now I use it in my storage bins too.
It sounds too simple to work, but it really does. Below are the two spots where I use mine most.

Protect Your Garage Walls and Car Doors

Slice a pool noodle lengthwise with a utility knife, then glue, screw or tape it to the wall at the height where your car door swings open. It cushions the impact so you stop putting dings in the door or dents in the drywall.
Do the same along a narrow shelf edge or workbench corner where you tend to bump your head or arm. (This one is genius because I do this soooo much!)
One noodle covers a surprising amount of wall space, and it is an easy weekend fix.
Cushion Fragile Items in Storage
Cut a noodle into short sections and slide them over the edges of wire shelving so glass jars and picture frames do not chip when you slide them in and out.
Tuck a few pieces into moving boxes around framed photos or dishes for extra padding that will not tear like bubble wrap can.
Foam noodles are cheap, reusable, and easy to trim to whatever size the job calls for.
