I don't know about you, but my library card sat forgotten in a kitchen drawer for years. I'd pay for the ebook, add another streaming show to the list, and grab a magazine at checkout, all without ever thinking about the free version sitting a few blocks from my house. It just felt easier to tap buy than to remember a card I hadn't used since my kids were little.
One habit that's easy to overlook is putting your library card back to work. Most of us still picture the library as a quiet room of paperbacks, but today's card unlocks free ebooks and audiobooks through apps like Libby, free movies and shows through Hoopla or Kanopy, and sometimes even passes to local museums, zoos, and state parks. That's the kind of hiding in plain sight savings I love pointing out, because the access is usually already yours, you just haven't picked it up yet.
This week, dig that card out of the drawer, or ask your library to issue you a new one if it's been a while. You might be surprised how much is already paid for and waiting on you.

Why Your Library Card Matters

Most libraries have quietly turned into digital hubs over the last several years, but the word hasn't fully gotten out. While you're paying monthly for ebooks, streaming shows, or audiobook credits, your library card likely gives you all three for free, along with discounted or free admission to local attractions.
The catch is that none of it shows up automatically. You have to know which apps to download and which perks your specific library system offers, since it varies from town to town.
My library also has tons of activities that are wonderful to join in on. I especially love taking my great nephew to some of them... he does too!
How To Do It
1. Renew or replace your card. If you can't remember the last time you used it, call or visit your branch. Most libraries can renew or reissue a card in minutes, and many let you do it online.
2. Download Libby and link your card. This free app gives you ebooks and audiobooks you can borrow right from your phone, no due date drives required.
3. Check for a streaming option. Look for Hoopla or Kanopy on your library's website. Both offer free movies, shows, and documentaries with your card number.
4. Ask about museum and attraction passes. Many libraries partner with local museums, zoos, and science centers to offer free or discounted passes you can reserve online.
5. Look for extras specific to your branch. Some libraries lend tools, sewing machines, telescopes, or even cake pans. Ask what's available near you, it's often more than you'd guess.
6. Set a reminder to check back. New digital perks and partnerships get added throughout the year. A quick look every few months keeps you from missing new savings.
It's a Small Card With Big Savings
Between ebook purchases, streaming subscriptions, and the cost of a family outing, this one free card can easily save you $20 to $50 a month if you use even a couple of its perks regularly.
It takes almost no effort to dig out a card you already own, or replace one you lost. That's what living thrifty is all about: using what's already available to you before you reach for your wallet.
