Got a minute? Good.
I've never been a bleach fan. Sure, it whitens and disinfects, but it also irritates eyes, lungs, and skin, and over time it can eat tiny holes in your favorite shirts (or yellow them, if your water has any rust in it).
A while back I started mixing my own alternative with hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice, and I haven't looked back. It brightens whites just as well, but it's gentler on fabric and a lot easier to breathe around.
One note: peroxide loses its punch once opened, so I only mix small batches at a time. Below is exactly how I do it.

Mix Your Own Bleach Alternative
Photo: A homemade mix of hydrogen peroxide, lemon juice, and water — my gentler go-to for brighter whites without the bleach fumes.
This recipe makes about one quart.
Combine in a jar or glass bottle:
- 1/2 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 3.5 cups of water
Stir, and seal with the lid.
Use one cup per load for white clothes, or just 1/4 cup for light colors, and always spot-test for color fastness first.
Use It the Right Way
Pour the mixture straight into the drum, or into the bleach dispenser if your machine has one.
For heavily soiled loads, soak overnight in detergent first, then add this alternative before washing.
Use the hottest water safe for the fabric, and you may need to run it twice.
One rule to remember: don't let hydrogen peroxide sit on clothes longer than twenty minutes, or it can start to weaken the fibers.
