I don't know about you, but the furnace filter is one of those things I never think about until the house smells a little dusty the first time the heat kicks on. It's easy to forget because, well, it's tucked away out of sight and out of mind. But I've learned that a two-minute check now can save a lot of hassle once the weather turns cold.

I hope this week's tip inspires you to check one more item off your home maintenance list before the temperature drops. Sometimes the smallest jobs deliver the biggest savings.

Why Changing Your Furnace Filter Matters

Over time, dust and debris build up inside your furnace filter. That buildup restricts airflow, which makes the system work harder to push warm air through your home. A furnace working overtime means higher energy bills and extra wear on the motor and other parts. If left too long, a clogged filter can lead to costly repairs or an early replacement.

Swapping the filter before you turn the heat on for the season lets your furnace breathe easy and run the way it's supposed to, using less energy in the process.

How To Do It

1. Find your filter size and type. Check the edge of your old filter or your furnace manual for the correct size before you buy a replacement.

2. Turn off the system. Switch your thermostat off, or shut off power to the furnace, before you open the filter housing.

3. Remove the old filter and take a look. Slide it out. If it's gray, matted, or coated in dust, it was overdue for a change.

4. Insert the new filter facing the right direction. Look for the airflow arrow printed on the frame, it should point toward the furnace.

5. Set a reminder for next time. Standard filters typically need swapping every 1 to 3 months. Put a reminder on your calendar or phone so it doesn't slip your mind again.

6. Restore power. Turn the system back on, and you're done.

It's a Small Swap With Big Savings

If you're comfortable with basic DIY, changing a furnace filter takes about two minutes and costs somewhere between $10 and $20 for a standard replacement. Compare that to a furnace repair bill or an early replacement, and it's an easy trade.

A little preventative maintenance today can help you avoid expensive surprises once winter settles in. That's what living thrifty is all about: taking care of what you have so it lasts longer and costs less in the long run.
