There's a reason certain guns show up in every conflict zone on earth, decade after decade, army or no army. It's not about being the most accurate or the most powerful. It's about running when nothing else will, in the hands of someone with no armorer, no spare parts bin, and no time to babysit a rifle. Guerrilla warfare runs on scarcity. No steady supply lines, no climate-controlled armories, no armorer on call. So the guns that thrive there share a short list of traits: dead-simple mechanics, loose tolerances that shrug off mud and sand, cheap enough to arm entire movements, and easy enough that a fighter with a week of training can run one. Precision and polish take a back seat to one question: will it fire the next time you pull the trigger?
The AK-47: The Gun That Never Says No
No rifle owns this category like the AK-47. Mikhail Kalashnikov built it with generous clearances between moving parts, so it keeps cycling even caked in dirt or rusted at the edges. Field-strip it in seconds, and you'll count fewer than ten major parts. It's forgiving of bad ammo, bad storage, and worse maintenance, which is exactly why it's armed everyone from national militaries to jungle insurgencies since the 1940s.
The Supporting Cast: SKS, M1 Carbine, and the Sten
The AK gets the headlines, but it had company. The SKS carbine delivered AK-level durability with better accuracy at a lower cost, arming fighters before the AK took over. The M1 Carbine's light weight made it a favorite for moving fast through jungle and city alike. And Britain's Sten gun proved a submachine gun could be stamped out of sheet metal in a garage, cheap enough to hand to an entire resistance. Different guns, same mission: keep working when nothing else can be relied on.
