More Than Just Another Luger
The pistol at the center of the controversy is reported to be a 1907 Luger Parabellum .45 caliber prototype, a model already considered exceptionally rare by collectors. According to court filings, it also bears an inscription with Adolf Hitler's name and is alleged to have been brought to Argentina after World War II by a former member of Hitler's bodyguard. Those claims are part of the ongoing legal dispute and have not been independently verified.
Its combination of rarity and alleged historical provenance is what has driven estimates placing its value at roughly $42 million, though any final valuation would ultimately depend on authentication, provenance, and market demand.
The Court Battle
The current owner claims the pistol disappeared after a 2016 police raid at his home in Argentina. Although he was never charged with the underlying allegations that prompted the search, he alleges the firearm vanished while in government custody.
He's now suing Argentine authorities for compensation, while criminal proceedings against two officers connected to the raid are expected to continue. A court has already awarded preliminary damages while experts determine the pistol's potential value.
