Got a minute? Good.
I have to admit, when I first heard that beer could be useful for cleaning, I thought someone was pulling my leg. Beer belongs at the barbecue, right? Well, it turns out that leftover or flat beer can have another job around the house, especially when you pair it with something as simple as baking soda.
So before you pour that last little bit of beer down the sink, you might want to put it to work!

Refresh A Smelly Drain
Photo: Before you toss that leftover beer, put it to work freshening a smelly drain with a little baking soda.
If your kitchen sink could use a little freshening, grab some leftover beer and baking soda.
Start by pouring about a cup of flat beer down the drain. Let it sit for a few minutes, then add about 1/2 cup of baking soda. The two will fizz together, helping loosen residue and buildup that can contribute to unpleasant odors. Let it work for about 10 to 15 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.
Why It Works: Beer is mildly acidic, while baking soda is alkaline. When they meet, they react and create bubbles that can help loosen grime and residue clinging inside the drain. The beer's acidity can also help break down some organic residue.
This isn't a replacement for a serious clogged-drain treatment, but for a drain that simply needs a little freshening, it's a clever way to use something you might otherwise throw away.
Give Your Garden Tools Some Shine
Here's another place baking soda earns its keep. Make a simple paste with baking soda and a little water, then use it to scrub dirt and grime from garden tools, hand tools, or other metal surfaces.
The fine texture of baking soda provides gentle abrasion without being as harsh as some commercial cleaners. Rinse and dry the tools thoroughly afterward to help prevent rust.
A little baking soda can go a surprisingly long way, and that is exactly the kind of household trick I love finding.
