I don't know about you, but I tend to forget about things that are quietly doing their job every day. Light bulbs are a perfect example. If they turn on when I flip the switch, I assume everything's fine.
But I recently learned something that made me stop and take a closer look. Those curly compact fluorescent (CF) bulbs that were all the rage years ago? Millions are still being used, and some of them could actually become a safety hazard as they age.
The good news is that replacing them is one of the easiest home upgrades you can make. It's inexpensive, takes just a few minutes, and can improve both your home's safety and your electric bill.

Why It's Time To Replace Old CFL Bulbs

Compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs were once the go-to energy-saving alternative to incandescent bulbs, but technology has come a long way.
As CFLs age, especially when they're installed horizontally in fixtures like bathroom vanity lights, some models can develop a dangerous problem. The glass tube may begin to sag and eventually separate from the base while the bulb is still working. That creates a potential fire hazard because the electrical components remain energized.
If you still have older spiral CFL bulbs around your home, especially ones that have been in use for years, it's a good idea to replace them before they become a problem.
Upgrade To LEDs And Save Every Month
Replacing old CFLs with LED bulbs is a win in almost every way.
LEDs use up to 75% less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs and generally use less power than CFLs while producing the same amount of light. They also last much longer, often 15 to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs, meaning you'll spend less on replacement bulbs over time.
Unlike CFLs, LEDs contain no mercury, turn on instantly at full brightness, stay cool during operation, and are available in warm or daylight colors to match any room.
