A ceiling fan doesn't replace your air conditioner, but it does help your home feel cooler. That means you can turn your thermostat up a few degrees without sacrificing comfort, and those small adjustments can really add up over the course of a summer.

Ceiling fans create a wind-chill effect that can make you feel up to 4 degrees cooler, even though they don't actually lower the room's temperature.

Because you feel cooler, many people can raise their thermostat by about 4 degrees and remain just as comfortable. Since air conditioning is one of the biggest energy users in most homes, every degree you raise the thermostat can help reduce cooling costs. Four degrees means about $9 to $15 a month in savings!

Just remember, fans cool people, not rooms. Turn the fan off when no one is in the room to avoid wasting electricity.

Make Sure It's Spinning the Right Way

During the summer, your ceiling fan should spin counterclockwise. The blades push air downward, creating that refreshing breeze you feel below.

Many fans have a small switch on the motor housing that lets you reverse the direction. In the winter, switch it to clockwise at a low speed to gently circulate warm air that's collected near the ceiling. It's a simple change that can help your heating system work more efficiently too.

Sometimes the easiest ways to save money are already hanging right above our heads.
