Every year I get excited to see my flowers and vegetables start growing... and every year it seems the local squirrels and rabbits get just as excited. I've tried all kinds of expensive gadgets over the years, but one of the simplest tricks has been sitting in my kitchen all along.

Black pepper can help create a natural scent barrier that many common garden pests would rather avoid. It's inexpensive, easy to apply, and doesn't require harsh chemicals. Like many natural remedies, it isn't permanent, but with a little maintenance it can help protect your hard work.

Shake On A Natural Barrier

Ground black pepper gives off a strong scent that can discourage squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, and other curious visitors from digging around your plants. Sprinkle a light ring around seedlings, flower beds, and garden borders where animals usually enter.

Avoid seasoned pepper blends that contain salt or other additives, since those ingredients aren't good for your soil. Whole peppercorns can also work, although ground pepper releases its scent more quickly.

Make It Work Longer

Natural repellents need a little upkeep. Rain, heavy dew, and watering wash away the pepper's scent, so reapply every few days or after wet weather.

If persistent pests keep coming back, you can strengthen the barrier by mixing a little garlic powder or cayenne pepper with the black pepper. The combination creates multiple scents that many animals find unpleasant without relying on chemical sprays. Just be careful not to over apply in areas where pets or young children frequently play.

In Closing

Sometimes the best garden solutions don't come from the garden center. Before spending money on another repellent, take a look in your spice cabinet. You may already have everything you need to give your plants a little extra protection.
