Read about our staffGreetings!

I don't know about you, but my homeowners insurance bill is one of those expenses I rarely think about... until it goes up (which it seems to EVERY year). Like most people, I used to assume the only way to save money was to shop around for a different policy every few years.

But recently I learned something interesting. Insurance companies don't just look at your house, they also look at how likely it is they'll have to pay a claim. The lower the risk, the lower your premium may be.

That got me wondering what simple changes around the house could actually make a difference. As it turns out, there are a couple of surprisingly easy ones. If you've been looking for painless ways to trim your monthly expenses, these are definitely worth checking into.

Two Ways to Lower Home Insurance Costs

Add Smart Home Technology

Many insurance companies reward homeowners who take steps to prevent costly damage. That's where smart home technology comes in.

Devices such as water leak detectors, frozen pipe monitors, gas leak detectors, and smart door locks can alert you the moment something goes wrong. Catching a small problem before it turns into a major claim saves everyone money, including your insurance company.

While these systems typically cost between $300 and $700 to install, many insurers offer discounts that help offset the cost over time. Even better, preventing one water leak or frozen pipe could save you thousands in repairs.

Before investing in any smart device, call your insurance company and ask which systems qualify for discounts. Every insurer has its own list of eligible products.

Remove Unused Backyard Hazards

If you still have an old trampoline or playset sitting in the backyard that hasn't been touched in years, it could be costing you money.

Insurance companies classify items like trampolines, zip lines, playground equipment, diving boards, and pool slides as "attractive nuisances." While they're fun, they also increase the risk of injuries and liability claims, which often results in higher premiums.

If your family no longer uses these items, consider removing them. Then let your insurance company know. They won't automatically reduce your premium unless they're aware the added risk is gone.

In Closing

Saving money doesn't always require cutting coupons or giving something up. Sometimes it's as simple as making your home a little safer and asking your insurance company if you qualify for additional discounts. A quick phone call today could leave a little extra money in your pocket all year long.
