I've always loved finding a good bargain, and buying in bulk feels like one of those no-brainer money savers. After all, bigger packages should mean better prices...right? Not always.

I've learned that buying more doesn't automatically mean spending less. In fact, some of my biggest shopping mistakes came from assuming the giant package had to be the best deal. The good news is that with a couple of simple tricks, you can tell when buying in bulk is truly saving you money and when it's quietly draining your budget.

Warehouse clubs and oversized packages are designed to make us think we're getting an incredible bargain. Sometimes we are, but not always.

The best way to know if you're getting a deal is to ignore the package size and compare the unit price, the cost per ounce, pound, or item. You'll usually find it printed on the shelf tag beneath the regular price.

Bulk Buying Works Best for Everyday Staples

Buying in bulk makes the most sense for products your family uses regularly and that have a long shelf life.

Great bulk purchases include:
- Toilet paper and paper towels
- Laundry detergent
- Dish soap
- Rice and pasta
- Canned goods
- Coffee
- Pet food (if used quickly)

On the other hand, fresh produce, baked goods, snacks, and specialty foods often end up in the trash before they're finished. Wasted food is wasted money.

A simple rule to remember: If you wouldn't normally use that much before it expires, don't buy that much just because it's on sale.

Buying in bulk isn't about buying the biggest package on the shelf. It's about buying the right products at the right price. Compare the unit price, think about how quickly you'll use the item, and resist the urge to buy more than you need.
