I love discovering clever uses for everyday items, especially when they save money and keep something from ending up in the trash. It's amazing how often the solution to a household problem is already sitting in the pantry.

This week's tip comes from our very own reader Kelly! It is one of those "why didn't I think of that?" ideas. If your blender isn't performing like it used to, don't be too quick to replace it. A small handful of dry rice may be just what it needs to get back in action.

Sharpen Dull Blender Blades With Dry Rice

If your blender has started leaving chunks in your smoothies or struggling with frozen fruit, the blades may not actually be dull. More often, they're coated with tiny bits of food residue that build up over time.

Easy Trick to Try Before Replacing

Pour about 1/4 cup of uncooked, dry rice into a completely dry blender. Secure the lid and pulse for 20 to 30 seconds. As the rice moves around the jar, it gently scrubs away residue and lightly polishes the blades.

When you're finished, unplug the blender, discard the ground rice, and wash the jar thoroughly with warm, soapy water before using it again.

Keep in mind that this isn't a miracle fix for damaged blades. If they're chipped, bent, or loose, they'll need to be replaced. But if buildup is the problem, this quick pantry hack can often restore better blending performance in less than a minute.

I always appreciate tips that don't require special cleaners or expensive tools. Sometimes the simplest solutions really are the best. The next time your blender seems a little sluggish, grab the rice before you grab your wallet. You might be surprised by the results.
