The Cheapest Military Guns Ever Issued

When war breaks out, speed often matters just as much as firepower. Nations suddenly need millions of firearms, and building beautifully machined weapons simply isn't practical. That's why some of history's most successful military firearms were also among the cheapest ever issued. They weren't flashy, but they did exactly what they were designed to do.
Fun Fact: Early versions of the British Sten Gun reportedly cost only a small fraction of what it took to manufacture many other submachine guns of the era.
Built Fast, Built Cheap
Perhaps no firearm represents wartime simplicity better than the British Sten Gun.
Introduced during World War II, the Sten was made largely from stamped steel tubing and welded components. It required very little machining, making it inexpensive to manufacture in enormous numbers. More than four million were eventually produced.
The United States took a similar approach with the FP-45 Liberator, a single-shot pistol built to be produced quickly and cheaply for resistance fighters behind enemy lines. Although it saw limited use, it demonstrated just how inexpensive a functional firearm could be.

Many assume inexpensive firearms were unreliable, but that's only partly true.
The Sten developed a mixed reputation early on, yet later improvements made it a dependable battlefield weapon when properly maintained. Its low production cost allowed Britain to arm troops and resistance groups far faster than would have been possible with more complex designs.
Other nations followed the same philosophy. Germany produced emergency weapons like the MP 3008 near the end of World War II, while the Soviet Union relied heavily on simplified manufacturing techniques to produce millions of PPSh-41 submachine guns.

These budget-built firearms proved an important point: smart engineering often beats expensive engineering.
By simplifying parts, reducing machining, and speeding assembly, manufacturers created weapons that could be repaired easily, mass-produced quickly, and trusted in combat.
Modern firearm manufacturers continue to borrow many of these ideas, using efficient manufacturing methods while maintaining reliability and durability.
The cheapest guns ever issued weren't designed to impress collectors. They were designed to answer an urgent need, and many succeeded beyond anyone's expectations. Decades later, they remain fascinating reminders that sometimes the simplest solution is also the smartest.
