Read about our staffGreetings!

A few years ago I stumbled across a story about someone flying to Europe for less than the cost of a nice dinner. It sounded too good to be true, but it wasn't. They had booked what travelers call an "error fare," a pricing mistake that airlines or travel sites occasionally make.

They're rare, and they don't last long, but when they pop up they can save you hundreds, sometimes even thousands, on airfare. Even if you don't have a trip planned today, knowing how these deals work could pay off the next time you're ready to travel.

Fly for Less, The Secret of Error Fares

What Is an Error Fare?

An error fare, sometimes called a mistake fare, happens when an airline or booking website accidentally lists a ticket for far less than its intended price. It could be caused by a currency conversion issue, a missing fuel surcharge, or simple human error.

The key is speed. These fares often disappear within a few hours after they're discovered. Travelers who monitor deal alerts are usually the first to grab them.

If you book one, it's smart to wait a few days before making non-refundable hotel reservations or buying event tickets. Occasionally the airline may cancel the booking, although many choose to honor the fare.

How to Find Them

You don't have to spend all day searching airline websites. Instead, sign up for airfare deal alerts that monitor thousands of routes and notify subscribers when an incredible fare appears.

My favorite alert site is Skyscanner because it is free.

Be flexible with your travel dates and departure airports. A little flexibility can turn a good deal into an unbelievable one.

Also remember that the lowest fare isn't always the best value. Compare baggage fees, seat selection costs, and layovers before clicking "Book."

In Closing

Most people assume cheap flights only happen during big sales. In reality, some of the best travel bargains are completely accidental. Catching one takes a little luck, but knowing they exist is the first step toward your next affordable adventure.
