Read about our staffGot a minute? Good.

One of the things I don't like about summer is all the wasps. I worry about all my little great nephews and nieces when they come over. For whatever reason my home just attracts so many nests.

I've tried the bug guy and it just works temporarily and after calling him back a few times they wanted to charge me again!

The good news is I found this simple homemade spray that uses ingredients you probably already have, plus a few safety reminders that can help you deal with wasps without making the situation worse.

A Homemade Wasp Spray That Really Works

Handy
Photo: A few common household ingredients can help you deal with unwanted wasps around your home.

You don't need expensive chemicals to tackle a small wasp problem. A simple mixture of vinegar and dish soap can be surprisingly effective.

Here's what you'll need:
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap

Pour everything into a plastic spray bottle and shake well before using.

For the best results, spray the nest or the wasps directly at dusk or after dark when they're less active. The vinegar helps interfere with the wasps' breathing, while the dish soap coats their breathing openings, making it difficult for them to survive.

If you're making a simple wasp trap, adding a small amount of sugar can help attract them.

Stay Safe Around Wasps

Even with a homemade spray, safety comes first.

Always wear long sleeves, gloves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes before approaching a nest. Move slowly and avoid making sudden movements that could agitate the wasps.

If the nest is large or wasps return after treatment, spray again after dark rather than during the day. However, if anyone in your household is allergic to wasp stings, don't risk it. Leave the job to a pest control professional.

A little caution can save you from painful stings and help keep your outdoor spaces enjoyable all summer long.

In Closing

Sometimes the best solutions are already sitting in your kitchen cabinet. This easy homemade spray is inexpensive, simple to make, and worth trying for small wasp problems. Just remember that your safety is more important than saving a few dollars. If a nest looks too large or is in a difficult location, don't hesitate to call in a professional.
