Simple Ways to Save Money on Your Air Conditioning This Summer
When the temperatures start climbing, most of us head straight for the thermostat. There is nothing better than walking into a cool house on a hot day. Unfortunately, keeping your air conditioner running all summer can lead to some pretty high energy bills. The good news is that there are several simple ways to stay comfortable while also saving money.
One of the easiest things you can do is adjust your thermostat. Many people keep their homes much cooler than necessary. Setting your thermostat just a few degrees higher can make a noticeable difference in your monthly bill. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends keeping your home
around 78 degrees when you are at home and raising it a little higher when you are away.
Another great way to save is by using
ceiling fans. Fans do not actually lower the temperature in a room, but they make you feel cooler by circulating the air. This means you can keep your thermostat a few degrees higher and still feel comfortable. Just remember to turn fans off when you leave a room because they cool people, not spaces.
Changing your
air filter regularly is another simple but important step. A dirty filter forces your air conditioner to work harder, which uses more energy and can shorten the life of the system. Most filters should be checked every month and replaced every one to three months, depending on usage and the type of filter you have.

Keeping sunlight out of your home can also help reduce cooling costs. During the hottest part of the day, close your blinds, curtains, or shades, especially on windows that get direct sunlight. Blocking the sun can keep rooms noticeably cooler and reduce the amount of work your air conditioner has to do.
You should also pay attention to air leaks around your home. Small gaps around windows and doors allow cool air to escape and let hot air inside. Adding weather stripping or caulk is an inexpensive way to improve energy efficiency and lower your cooling costs.
Another smart idea is to avoid
creating extra heat inside your house. Using the oven, dryer, or dishwasher during the hottest part of the day can make your air conditioner work overtime. Try cooking outside on the grill or using smaller appliances like an air fryer or slow cooker when possible. Running appliances in the evening can also help.
Finally, do not forget about regular maintenance. Having your air conditioner professionally serviced once a year can keep it running efficiently and help identify small problems before they become expensive repairs.
Staying cool during the summer does not have to mean spending a fortune on energy bills. By making a few small changes, such as adjusting your thermostat, replacing air filters, using fans and blocking sunlight, you can keep your home comfortable while putting a little extra money back in your pocket. Sometimes the simplest habits make the biggest difference.
