Read about our staffGreetings!

Every summer I seem to have the same conversation with myself. Do I want a beautiful lawn, or do I want a lower water bill? Thankfully, it doesn't have to be one or the other. I learned that a few small changes in how and when I water made a noticeable difference without turning my yard into a patch of brown grass.

If you've been watching your utility bills climb, your lawn and garden are a great place to start trimming costs. You don't need expensive irrigation systems or fancy gadgets. A few smart habits can save thousands of gallons over the course of a season.

Water Smarter, Not More

Water early in the morning before the sun gets high. Less water evaporates, giving your grass and plants more time to soak it in.

Water deeply but less often. This encourages deeper roots, making your lawn more drought-resistant. If you use a sprinkler, check that it's watering the grass, not the driveway or sidewalk.

Help Your Plants Hold Moisture

Spread two to three inches of mulch around flowers, shrubs, and vegetables. Mulch keeps the soil cooler, reduces evaporation, and helps prevent weeds from stealing valuable moisture.

Group plants with similar watering needs together so you aren't overwatering some while trying to keep others alive. If rain is in the forecast, skip a scheduled watering and let nature do the work for free.

In Closing

Saving water isn't just good for the environment. It's one of the easiest ways to lower your summer utility bills while keeping your yard looking its best. Sometimes the smartest savings come one drop at a time.
