Read about our staffGreetings!

I'm baaaack! We are shuffling some things around here at Gophercentral.com and Kris is going back to writing her beloved Handy Hints and I'm back to writing Thrifty Tips because I love to find ways to save money and live better!

Today we're going to tackle weeds! Ever notice the minute you pull them they're back in a day or so? Pulling is great, but using a weed killer helps prevent them coming back so fast.

The dilemma? So many are bad for the you and the environment. If you have pets and kids this is even more important.

I've found a couple of home made weed killers that are safe and cost pennies! They work well too.

The Vinegar Weed Killer

Thrifty

One of the easiest homemade weed killers starts with plain white vinegar. Mix 1 gallon of white vinegar with 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap and pour it into a spray bottle.

Spray the mixture directly onto weeds on a warm, sunny day. The vinegar dries out the leaves while the soap helps the solution stick to the plant longer. Most weeds begin wilting within 24 to 48 hours.

This method works best on younger weeds and those growing in cracks, gravel, and other areas where you don't have desirable plants nearby. Just remember that vinegar doesn't know the difference between a weed and a flower, so spray carefully.

The Boiling Water Method

H 5 Dollar New OrangeSometimes the simplest solutions are the best. Bring a pot of water to a boil and carefully pour it directly onto unwanted weeds.

Boiling water is especially effective for weeds growing between patio pavers, along sidewalks, and in driveway cracks. The heat damages the plant and often reaches the roots as well.

What I like most about this method is that it costs virtually nothing and leaves no chemical residue behind. You may need to repeat the process on stubborn weeds, but it's hard to beat the price.

In Closing

Neither of these methods will eliminate every weed forever, but they'll help you keep them under control without spending a small fortune at the garden center. That's the kind of thrifty solution I can get behind!
