Read about our staffGreetings!

You don't need a cabinet full of specialty cleaners to get your home spotless. This week we're sharing the kitchen-cabinet staples that outperform most store-bought products, and cost almost nothing.

Make one all-purpose cleaning kit: a spray bottle of vinegar-water, a box of baking soda, and a stack of microfiber cloths. That's genuinely 90% of what you need to clean your entire home, for about $5 total. Everything else in your cleaning cabinet is probably a duplicate or a luxury you don't need.

White vinegar is your all-purpose workhorse
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and you've got a cleaner that tackles countertops, glass, stovetops, and bathroom surfaces. It cuts grease, kills most household bacteria, and eliminates odors. A gallon jug runs about $3 and lasts for months, compared to $4–6 for a single bottle of name-brand spray cleaner.

Baking soda scrubs so you don't have to
Sprinkle baking soda on sinks, tubs, and tile grout, then scrub with a damp sponge or brush. It's mildly abrasive enough to lift grime without scratching surfaces. Add a few drops of dish soap for extra degreasing power. A $1 box handles dozens of cleaning session, no specialty scrub required.

Stop buying dryer sheets...use dryer balls instead
Wool dryer balls reduce drying time by up to 25%, soften clothes naturally, and last for 1,000+ loads. A set of six costs around $10–15 upfront. If you're currently spending $5–8 per month on dryer sheets, you'll break even in two months and save every month after that.

Use half the laundry detergent you think you need
Most detergent manufacturers recommend 2–3x more product than your washer actually needs, especially with high-efficiency machines. Cut your dose in half. Your clothes will come out just as clean, your machine will run better (less soap residue buildup), and your detergent will last twice as long.

Microfiber cloths replace paper towels almost entirely
A pack of 12 microfiber cloths costs around $10 and can replace hundreds of dollars in paper towels over their lifetime. They clean glass streak-free without any cleaner, wipe down surfaces more effectively than disposable towels, and wash and reuse up to 500 times. The average household spends $100+ on paper towels annuall, most of that is unnecessary.
