The Loudest Firearms Ever Made

Locked

Some guns leave a mark on the target.

Others leave a mark on your ears.

If you've ever touched off a serious caliber without proper protection, you already know… sound is part of the experience. And some firearms take that to a whole different level.

Let's talk about the ones that don't just bark… they roar.

Why Some Guns Are So Loud

Every shot starts the same way.

You pull the trigger, the powder ignites, and pressure builds fast. When that pressure escapes the barrel, it creates the blast you hear.

But not all blasts are equal.

Short barrels, high-pressure rounds, and aggressive muzzle devices all make things louder. Less barrel means less time for gases to expand, so they hit the open air harder and faster.

That's why something like a short-barreled AR-15 can feel shockingly loud, even compared to larger rifles. The sound is sharper, more violent, and often directed right back at you.

Once you cross about 140 decibels, you're already in the danger zone for hearing damage.

Many of the firearms we're about to talk about go way past that.

The Ear-Splitting Heavy Hitters

1 ClearTag At the top of the list, you've got serious powerhouses.

The .460 Weatherby Magnum is one of them. Built for dangerous game, it produces a deep, thunderous blast that can push past 170 decibels. It's not just loud, it's concussive.

Then there's the Smith & Wesson Model 500. Massive round, shorter barrel, and all that energy gets dumped fast. The result is a sharp, violent crack that's hard to forget.

Step up again and you'll find the Barrett M107. The .50 BMG round already delivers serious force, but the muzzle brake redirects that blast sideways, creating a pressure wave you feel in your chest.

Even compact guns can make the list.

The Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull is brutally loud for its size. Short barrel, big cartridge, and nowhere for that pressure to go except out… fast.

And while it's not a traditional firearm, the M72 LAW deserves a mention. The backblast alone is enough to remind you that sound isn't just something you hear, it's something you feel.

The Reality Most People Ignore

Here's the part that gets overlooked.

Loud doesn't just mean impressive. It means permanent damage if you're not careful.

It only takes one unprotected shot at these levels to cause lasting hearing loss. And the damage adds up fast over time.

That's why protection matters. Earplugs, muffs, or both. No exceptions.

Some shooters also turn to suppressors where legal. Not to make guns silent, but to bring the noise down to a safer level.

Because at the end of the day, the goal isn't just to shoot well.

It's to keep doing it for years without paying the price later.

Until next time, stay locked and loaded.
