Greetings!
Your phone and internet bills are two of the most negotiable expenses in your monthly budget, and two of the most ignored.
Most people set up autopay and never look at them again, quietly absorbing small rate increases year after year without realizing how much the total has drifted.
The good news is that a single phone call, a quick look at your actual data usage, or a willingness to shop around can put real money back in your pocket every month.
Unlike a lot of financial fixes, this one doesn't require sacrifice, jsut a little attention applied to bills you're already paying. The tips below will show you exactly where to start.
Let's get thrifty!

Call and Ask for a Better Rate Now
This is the single most effective thing you can do and most people never try it. Call your phone and internet providers, tell them you have been a loyal customer, and ask what they can do for you. Mention that you have seen better rates elsewhere. Companies would far rather keep you at a lower margin than lose you to a competitor. A single phone call can result in $20 - $50 or more off your monthly bill.
Buy Your Own Router and Modem
If you are renting equipment from your internet provider, you are likely paying about $10-$15 a month for the privilege, sometimes even more. Buying your own compatible modem and router costs $70 - $100 upfront and pays for itself withing six to eight months. After that you are saving that rental fee every single month forever. Check your provider's website for a list of compatible equipment before purchasing.
Negotiate Your Internet Rate Every Year
Internet promotional rates typically last 12 months before jumping significantly. Most people just pay the higher rate without realizing they can negotiate. When your promotional period ends, call and ask to be put back on a promotional rate or threaten to cancel.
Providers almost always have retention offers available that aren't advertised. If they won't budge, look up competing providers in your area before you call, having a real alternative makes the conversation much more productive.
