How Much Ammo Should You Really Carry?
Photo: A simple everyday carry setup with a handgun and spare magazine is often all you really need.
There are two types of people in this debate.
The ones who carry a full loadout like they're heading into a movie scene… and the ones who think a single mag is more than enough.
The truth? It lives somewhere in the middle.
If you carry daily, you've probably asked yourself this question at least once: how much ammo is actually enough?
Let's break it down in a practical way.
The Modern Carry Setup
With today's handguns, capacity isn't what it used to be.
A compact like the Glock 43X can easily run higher-capacity magazines, and many everyday carry setups land in that 12 to 20 round range without much effort.
That changes the conversation.
For most people, carrying the gun plus one spare magazine is the sweet spot. That usually puts you somewhere around 20 rounds total, which is more than enough for the vast majority of real-world situations.
Could you carry more? Sure.
Do you need to? Probably not.
There's a big difference between being prepared and being overloaded. If your setup is uncomfortable, bulky, or complicated, you're less likely to carry it consistently. And consistency matters more than anything.
Low Capacity Guns Change the Equation

Now, if you're running something like a 1911 pistol or a revolver, things shift a bit.
These are great firearms. Reliable, proven, and a lot of people trust them.
But capacity is limited.
With a 1911, you might be working with 7 or 8 rounds in the magazine. Even with one spare, you're still behind what a modern double-stack offers.
Revolvers are even tighter, often holding 5 or 6 rounds. That's where reload options like speed strips or speed loaders come into play.
They help, but they're not the same as swapping a magazine.
If you carry one of these, it makes sense to plan a little more. A spare mag or reload isn't overkill here, it's just being realistic.
The Balance Most People Miss
This is where opinions get loud.
Some people will tell you to carry everything you own. Extra mags, backup tools, gear for every possible scenario.
Others will say you don't need anything beyond what's in the gun.
Both extremes miss the point.
Carrying isn't about preparing for every possible disaster. It's about having enough to get out of a bad situation safely.
For most people, that means your firearm and one spare magazine. That's it.
It's simple. It's practical. And it works.
Anything beyond that starts to become a personal choice, not a necessity.
At the end of the day, the best setup is the one you'll actually carry every single day.
Because gear in a drawer doesn't help you.
Until next time, stay locked and loaded.
