Firearms That Defined an Era of Action Movies
Photo: The Beretta 92FS ruled the movies in the 80s and 90s. Both Mel Gibson and Bruce Willis used it in their iconic roles in Lethal Weapon and Die Hard.
Action movies have always had their heroes.
But sometimes the guns become just as famous as the characters holding them.
Certain firearms appeared so often on screen that they became tied to an entire generation of movies. When you see them today, they instantly bring back memories of slow-motion gunfights, one-liners, and explosions that could probably be seen from space.
Here are a few firearms that helped define the golden age of action movies.
The Pistol That Ruled the 80s and 90s
Few handguns became as recognizable as the Beretta 92FS.
During the 1980s and 1990s, this sleek Italian pistol seemed to appear in nearly every action film. One of its most famous appearances came in the classic Christmas action movie Die Hard, where Bruce Willis carried it as John McClane.
At the time, the Beretta had just been adopted by the U.S. military as the M9 pistol, which helped boost its popularity even further.
The gun had the perfect look for Hollywood: large, modern, and instantly recognizable on screen. For many moviegoers, the Beretta 92FS became the definitive action hero sidearm.
The Submachine Gun That Stole Every Scene

If one firearm dominated action movies in the 1980s, it might be the Heckler & Koch MP5.
Compact, futuristic, and incredibly smooth in operation, the MP5 became the go-to weapon for elite characters and special forces teams. Its most memorable appearance may have been in Die Hard, where the villains carried them throughout the film.
The MP5 also appeared in countless other movies and TV shows, often in the hands of SWAT teams and counter-terror units.
Thanks to its sleek design and reputation for precision, it became one of the most recognizable submachine guns ever put on screen.
The Shotgun That Meant Business
Some guns in movies are used for style.
Others signal that things are about to get serious.
Enter the SPAS-12.
This distinctive shotgun gained legendary status thanks to its appearance in The Terminator, where Arnold Schwarzenegger wielded it with devastating effect.
With its folding stock, heat shield, and aggressive design, the SPAS-12 looked like something built specifically for action movies.
And Hollywood loved it.
The shotgun went on to appear in countless films throughout the 80s and 90s, becoming one of the most visually recognizable firearms ever used on screen.
Some guns become famous on the battlefield.
Others earn their reputation at the range.
But a few become legends thanks to the silver screen—and decades later, fans still recognize them instantly.
Until next time, stay locked and loaded.
