Women With Guns: The Action Heroes Who Redefined Firepower
Photo: Hollywood's female action heroes didn’t just change the script. They changed the image of the modern gunfighter.
For decades, action movies were dominated by tough guys with big guns and bigger explosions. But over the years, a new group of action heroes stepped into the spotlight. Women who could shoot, fight, and command the screen just as well as any action legend.
And they did it with style.
From twin pistols to submachine guns, some of the most memorable characters in modern action cinema are women who handle firearms with confidence and precision. Whether the tactics are realistic or pure Hollywood, these characters helped redefine what a gunfighter on screen could look like.
Here are a few of the most iconic.
Lara Croft: Dual Pistols and Global Adventure
When Angelina Jolie stepped into the role of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, she instantly created one of the most recognizable action characters in movie history.
Croft's signature weapons are a pair of Heckler & Koch USP Match pistols, carried in twin hip holsters that became part of her iconic look. In the films, Lara uses them with lightning-fast reflexes while battling mercenaries, solving ancient mysteries, and navigating dangerous ruins.
While the pistols get most of the attention, Croft is portrayed as proficient with rifles and other weapons as well. The character helped cement the image of the modern female action hero: confident, capable, and heavily armed.
Trinity: Precision and Cool Under Pressure

Few action scenes are as memorable as Trinity's introduction in The Matrix. Dressed in black and moving with precision, Carrie-Anne Moss created one of the coolest gunfighters ever put on screen.
Her primary sidearms are Beretta 84FS Cheetah pistols, chosen in part because the compact design suited the actress's hand size while still maintaining the classic Beretta look.
Trinity is also seen using a Micro Uzi, especially during the famous lobby shootout scene that helped redefine action choreography in Hollywood.
What made Trinity stand out was her calm efficiency. She wasn't loud or flashy. She was precise, calculated, and extremely dangerous when the moment required it.
Furiosa, Selene, and Alice: Modern Icons of Firepower
The next generation of female action heroes pushed the concept even further.
In Mad Max: Fury Road, Charlize Theron plays Imperator Furiosa, a battle-hardened warrior who carries a Taurus PT99AF pistol while leading a rebellion against the tyrant Immortan Joe. Her mechanical arm and relentless determination made her one of the most memorable characters in the Mad Max universe.
Then there is Selene from the Underworld series, played by Kate Beckinsale. Her weapon of choice is a pair of Beretta 92FS pistols, which she uses while battling werewolves and rival vampires in the franchise's gothic firefights.
And of course Alice from Resident Evil, portrayed by Milla Jovovich. Alice often carries a Beretta 92FS Inox, and throughout the series she becomes a symbol of survival against overwhelming odds.
Together, these characters helped reshape the image of the armed action hero.
Today, audiences expect skill, strategy, and firepower from heroes of any gender. And in many cases, the women on screen are carrying some of the most memorable firearms in movie history.
Fun Fact: The compact pistol used by Trinity in The Matrix — the Beretta 84FS Cheetah — fires the .380 ACP cartridge, a popular choice for concealed carry due to its manageable recoil and relatively small frame.
