Read about our staffGreetings!

We are finishing up this week's series on saving your clothes and your wallet from unnecessary replacements.

Today we are going to focus on a surprisingly powerful habit of storing your clothes properly. You might think your closet
is just a place to hang shirts and sweaters, but closets can secretly sabotage your wardrobe. Overcrowded hangers, flimsy hooks, or improper folding can lead to wrinkles that are impossible to iron out, and stretched out shoulders and
collars.

The good news is with a few simple changes you can protect your favorite pieces for years to come.

Thrifty Closet Tips

Hanging heavy sweaters, cardigans, and chunky knits might seem convenient, but it's a sure fast way to stretch the shoulders out, distort fabric, and ruin the shape over time.

Fold sweaters neatly and place them on a shelf or in a drawer. Heavier sweaters should always go on the bottom of the pile so they don't squish lighter garments.

- Avoid overstuffing drawers and shelves, fabrics need space to breathe.
- Fold along natural seams to maintain shape.
- For seasonal storage consider bins & storage bags to keep dust and pests away.
- Use garment bags for delicate items like silk, lace, or embellished pieces.
- Avoid direct sunlight—UV rays fade and weaken fabric over time.
- Store items in a cool, dry space to prevent moisture damage and mildew.

Choose Your Hangers Wisely

Thin or flimsy wire hangers might seem convenient, but over time they warp the shape of your clothes, leaving shoulders stretched out and collars sagging. It's a hidden culprit behind misshapen jackets, blazers, and coats.

Thrifty Tricks:
Swap hangers out for wide, sturdy hangers. These distribute the weight evenly and maintain the original shape. Wooden or thick plastic hangers are more expensive, but they end up paying for themselves by keeping your clothes looking new longer.
