Check your tire pressure at least once a month, and anytime the weather changes drastically. Underinflated tires will create more rolling resistance, which will force your engine to work hard and burn more fuel. This can add extra dollars at the pump each month that you don't realize.
Low tire pressure can also cause uneven wear, which is bad for your tires. They won't last as long, and you will need to replace them sooner. This is one of the easiest money saving habits you can get in to your routine.
Thrifty Tip: Save Big By Skipping The Dealership
Dealerships are convenient, but they often charge premium prices for basic maintenance you can get done for far less elsewhere. Simple services like oil changes are usually much cheaper at your local auto shop.
Thrifty Tip: Lighten Your Load
Your car doesn't need to double as a storage unit. Extra weight from tools, sporting gear, and things that just don't belong in your car will make your engine work harder and burn more fuel. Even a small reduction in weight can improve the gas mileage, especially if you do a lot of city driving with frequent stops and gos.
Take a few minutes and clear out your trunk and back seat, and only keep what you actually need for driving. Less weight means better gas mileage, less wear on your brakes and suspension, and more money in your pocket.
