Read about our staffGreetings!

Believe it or not, long before store aisles were packed with specialty cleaner for every single surface and situation, homes were kept clean with just a handful of simple house staples. Many of them weren't even technically made for cleaning, but they worked beautifully (and still do).

Our grandma's knew you didn't need a cabinet full of over-priced products to keep a home tidy and clean.

Today I'm featuring some old-school tricks that have stood the test of time. They are affordable, effective, and proof that sometimes the simplest solution is the very best.

Handy Hint: How To Open Stubborn Jars

If a jar lid won't budge, flip the jar upside down and give the bottom a firm tap with the palm of your hand or even a spoon. This will break the vacuum seal and make the lid much easier to twist off. No rubber grip or gadget needed!

Thrifty Tip: Dust with Water?

Yes, skip the sprays when it comes to dusting. A slightly damp cloth is all you need to trap dust instead of sending it back into the air. Unlike dry dusting, which just spreads the particles around, a moistened rag will actually grab and hold the dust.

Make sure the cloth is barely wet, NOT DRIPPING, so it picks up dust without leaving streaks or puddles behind. No fancy products are required.

Thrifty Tip: Vinegar + Laundry = Money Saved

Stop spending money on fabric softener. Plain white vinegar does the job just as well (better, actually). It naturally neutralizes odors, removes mildew, stains and mold, and leaves clothes feeling soft without any residue.

Vinegar is helpful if you have pets, as it works to loosen pet hair from clothes during the wash. Simply pour 1/2 to 1 cup of white vinegar into the detergent or fabric softener compartment. If your washer doesn't have a designated compartment, just dilute the vinegar with a cup of water and add it directly to the drum.

PLEASE NOTE: Never mix vinegar with bleach.
