More Than Pumpkin Spice: How Fall Changes Your Body

Daylight Savings

So last weekend we "fell back" for daylight savings. That extra hour of sleep sounds awesome, right? But for a lot of us it also brings that weird fall feeling. Low energy, a bit moody, maybe even sluggish. Autumn does more than just bring pumpkin spice. Your body actually notices these seasonal changes.

Let's start with mood. You might feel a little grumpier or less motivated than usual. Less daylight means less Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, which can affect your mood. Some people even get Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. That is basically a type of depression that shows up at the same time every year. Shorter days mean lower serotonin and that can leave you feeling kind of blah.

Then there is energy. When it gets darker earlier your body produces more melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep. Normally morning sunlight tells your body to wake up, but in fall that clock can get a bit off. That can leave you tired, sluggish, and ready for a nap by the middle of the afternoon.

Even your overall get-up-and-go can take a hit. Cooler weather and shorter days often mean less movement. Being less active can slow your metabolism, weaken your immune system, and even lead to weight gain over time. No wonder you feel off sometimes.

The good news is you can fight it. Simple things like taking a walk during daylight hours, stretching, or joining a quick indoor class can make a big difference. Small, consistent changes can help keep your energy up, your mood steady, and your body feeling good throughout the season.

So the end of daylight savings might throw your body off for a little while, but understanding what is happening and making a few adjustments can help you glide through the season without feeling like a zombie.
