I love a good garage sale, both as a shopper and a seller. There is something so satisfying about turning clutter into cash. With the weather cooling and fall weekends ahead, it is the perfect time to host one of your own.

A well-planned garage sale can clear out your space and add a nice boost to your budget. Here are a few simple tips to help make yours a success.

My Five Best Tips

1. Pick the Right Day and Time
Saturday mornings are usually the best. Start early, around 8 a.m., and end by noon. Avoid holiday weekends, when most people are away. If you live near a community that holds a neighborhood sale, try to join in. More sales mean more traffic.

2. Get the Word Out
Post your sale on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or local community groups. Add clear signs on nearby corners with large arrows and your address. Balloons or bright colors help catch attention.

3. Price to Sell, Not to Store
Remember, the goal is to clear things out. Price items realistically and be willing to negotiate. Bundle smaller items together for one price, like books or kitchen gadgets. Keep a "free" box near the curb to attract more visitors.

4. Make It Easy to Shop
Display items neatly on tables instead of the ground when possible. Group similar items together, like clothing, tools, or toys. Have plenty of small bills and coins ready for change, and keep your money in a secure waist pouch or lockbox.

5. Donate What’s Left
At the end of the day, do not bring everything back inside. Box up what remains and donate it to a local charity or thrift store. You will declutter your home and may even get a tax deduction.
