A Father's Plea: Protect Our Kids Before It's Too Late

Locked N Loaded

As a father of two boys, Wednesday's news out of Minnesota hit me hard. Like every parent, I shudder at the thought of my children facing danger in a place that should be safe... their school. My heart goes out to the families and communities affected. There are no words that can fully convey the pain, grief, and confusion that comes after an event like this.

It's natural, in the wake of such tragedies, to ask: "What can we do to prevent this from happening again?" And as someone who believes in personal responsibility and the right to protect oneself, I've spent a lot of time thinking about what practical steps we can take to keep our children safe.

Schools are supposed to be sanctuaries, but the reality is that we need layers of protection. Armed security officers, improved emergency preparedness, and even trained teachers can be part of the solution - but they are not the only solutions. Mental health support, clear communication plans, and infrastructure designed for safety also play critical roles.

I understand that the idea of armed staff in schools is controversial. It's not a decision to take lightly. But I also know from experience, and from being a parent - that the peace of mind that comes from knowing someone is prepared to respond in an emergency can be invaluable. It's not about fear, it's about responsibility.

We must also have honest conversations as a society about what we can do proactively: identifying warning signs, investing in mental health resources, and ensuring our communities are equipped to respond effectively. These measures, combined with thoughtful security protocols, create a layered approach that protects students without creating unnecessary panic.

I share these thoughts not to provoke debate, but to encourage awareness and action. As parents, educators, and citizens, it's our duty to consider all angles of safety. I want my boys - and every child - to grow up in a world where they feel secure, where their schools are places of learning and not fear.

This is a difficult topic, and I know there are no easy answers. But staying silent is not an option. We must talk, plan, and take meaningful steps to protect the ones we love most.

If you have thoughts or ideas about school safety, please send them my way - I'll feature some of your perspectives in an upcoming newsletter.

Until next time, stay locked and loaded.
