Read about our staffGreetings!

I can't tell you how many times I used to toss a half-used lemon into the trash. But once I realized how many ways lemons can be used around the house, I started treating them like treasure.

Fresh or even a little dried-out, lemons can save you money, freshen your home, clean tough stains, and even do double-duty in your beauty routine. If you've got one sitting in your fridge, don't toss it. Read below for all the surprising things that a lemon can do.

Mighty Thirsty Mop

1. Deodorize the Garbage Disposal

Toss lemon rinds into the disposal and run it with hot water. It freshens up odors and leaves your sink smelling clean.

2. Clean Your Microwave

Microwave a bowl of water with a few lemon slices for 3 minutes. Let it sit to steam, then wipe down the inside—no scrubbing needed.

3. Brighten Dull Whites

Add a half cup of lemon juice to your laundry to naturally brighten whites. It works best when drying clothes in the sun.

4. Degrease and Shine Faucets

Rub a used lemon half over bathroom and kitchen faucets to cut through soap scum and hard water stains. Rinse and buff dry.

5. Freshen the Fridge

Early AccessPut a lemon half (cut side up) in a small bowl of baking soda. It absorbs odors and gives your fridge a fresh scent.

6. Natural Cutting Board Cleaner

Sprinkle coarse salt on your wooden cutting board and scrub with half a lemon. Rinse and dry—goodbye lingering onion smell.

7. DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub

Mix lemon juice, sugar, and olive oil for a budget-friendly body scrub that softens skin and smells amazing.

8. Keep Produce From Browning

Squeeze lemon juice over sliced apples, avocados, or bananas to keep them looking fresh longer.

9. Polish Copper or Brass

Dip a cut lemon in salt or baking soda and rub it on tarnished metal. It’ll shine like new.

10. Repel Bugs Naturally

Place lemon peels near entryways or windows to help deter ants and pests. Many insects dislike the citrus scent.

In Closing...

Lemons are one of the thriftiest fruits out there. Before you toss one, ask yourself—can I clean with it? Cook with it? Use it for self-care? Chances are, you can do all three. Waste less, save more, and enjoy that fresh citrus smell while you're at it.
