Greetings!
After heating and cooling your house water heating is typically the largest energy user in the home because it is necessary for so many domestic activities. This is why it pays to keep your water heater working as efficiently as possible.
Over time, sediment (mainly minerals like calcium and magnesium) builds up at the bottom of your water heater. This can cause various issues.
We are exploring them below AND giving you tips on keeping your water heater operating as best as possible.
Be Well,

What Happens When You Don't Clean Your Water Heater
Reduced Efficiency: The sediment acts as an insulator, making your heater work harder and use more energy.
Lower Water Pressure: Sediment can clog pipes and reduce water flow.
Potential Damage: Excess buildup can lead to overheating, corrosion, and even tank failure.
Strange Noises: Popping or rumbling sounds are often caused by sediment burning at the bottom of the tank.
How to Clean Your Hot Water Heater
Step 1: Turn Off Power & Water Supply
- Gas Heater: Turn the thermostat to “pilot” or shut off the gas.
- Electric Heater: Switch off the breaker at the electrical panel.
Turn off the cold water supply valve at the top of the heater.
Step 2: Drain the Tank
- Attach a garden hose to the drain valve (bottom of the heater).
- Place the hose’s other end in a floor drain or outside.
- Open a hot water faucet in your home to allow air in.
- Open the drain valve and let the water completely drain.
Step 3: Flush Out Sediment
- Turn the cold water supply back on briefly while the drain valve is open to flush out sediment.
- Let the water run until it comes out clear.
Step 4: Close & Refill
- Close the drain valve and remove the hose.
- Turn the cold water supply back on.
- Once the tank is full, turn the power or gas back on.
How Often Should You Do This?
- Every 6-12 months for best efficiency and longevity.
- If you have hard water, consider doing it more frequently.
