Spending guideline percentages can be a helpful tool for evaluating your financial habits. Keep in mind that these are meant for comparison, not strict rules. For example, many financial experts recommend allocating no more than 35% of your after-tax income to housing.

If your housing costs are closer to 40%, it’s not necessarily a problem—just aim to adjust spending in other areas to balance your budget.

The figures below come from the Department of Labor’s Consumer Expenditure Survey. They represent average household spending, not prescribed amounts. As the data shows, housing, food, and transportation account for about two-thirds of the average budget, leaving one-third for everything else. This is where money management becomes essential.

Food: 10-15%
Savings: At least 10%
Debt Repayment: 5-10%
Utilities: 5-10%
Insurance: 10-20%
Entertainment and Recreation: 5-10%
All Other: 5-10%

"All other" includes alcoholic beverages, reading, education, tobacco, personal care, cash contributions personal insurance and pensions and miscellaneous expenditures.

These percentages are just general guidelines and not one-size-fits-all. Your spending will depend on your unique circumstances, financial goals, and cost of living. Take these suggestions as a starting point and adjust them to fit your needs and priorities.
