GOP Halts Temporary Government Funding Measure at Trump's Urging

The federal government faces a potential shutdown on Friday as Republican lawmakers abruptly scrapped a bipartisan stopgap funding measure announced just a day earlier. The decision followed sharp criticism from former President Donald Trump, who urged Republicans to reject the proposal, calling it a concession to Democrats.

"Republicans must get smart and tough," Trump stated Wednesday in a joint release with Vice President-elect JD Vance. "If Democrats threaten to shut down the government unless we give them everything they want, then call their bluff."

The short-term funding measure had aimed to avert a shutdown and provide additional time for negotiations. However, Trump and Vance argued the plan was overly favorable to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats, accusing them of stalling vital aid.

"It is Schumer and Biden who are holding up aid to our farmers and disaster relief," they claimed in the statement, calling for a new measure that combines short-term funding with a debt ceiling increase.

"Republicans want to support our farmers, pay for disaster relief, and set our country up for success in 2025," they added. "The only way to do that is with a temporary funding bill without Democrat giveaways combined with an increase in the debt ceiling. Anything else is a betrayal of our country."

Trump further criticized the proposed stopgap funding as a "nasty trap set in place by the radical left Democrats," suggesting it was designed to embarrass Republicans during future votes.

Prominent Trump ally Elon Musk echoed these sentiments on X, stating that the spending bill should be defeated and calling for voters to oust any lawmakers supporting it in the next election cycle.

The rejection of the 1,547-page bipartisan measure leaves House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., scrambling for a solution. Johnson now faces the challenge of crafting a more streamlined proposal that can pass by Friday. Failure to do so would lead to a partial government shutdown.

One option under consideration involves abandoning provisions for disaster aid and farmer relief - totaling $130 billion - in favor of a continuing resolution that extends the current budget unchanged into the new year.

However, the GOP's self-imposed 72-hour waiting period between introducing and voting on a funding measure further complicates the timeline, making it nearly impossible to avoid a shutdown without immediate action.
