Trump Appoints Keith Kellogg as Special Envoy to Ukraine and Russia
President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Keith Kellogg as a special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, marking a key move in shaping his administration's foreign policy approach. Kellogg, an 80-year-old retired lieutenant general, previously served as the chief of staff of the National Security Council during Trump's first term and as a national security adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence.
Trump announced the appointment on social media, asserting that Kellogg's role would bolster "PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH."
Kellogg has been a prominent figure in Trump-aligned foreign policy circles, recently working with the America First Policy Institute. His skepticism of U.S. support for Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia aligns with a broader strategy to recalibrate America's role in the conflict.
Kellogg and former national security aide Fred Fleitz have proposed tying future U.S. aid to Ukraine to participation in peace talks with Russia. However, critics highlight the challenges of such an approach, given Russian President Vladimir Putin's apparent unwillingness to engage in meaningful negotiations since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
Currently, Russia occupies approximately 20% of Ukraine's territory and has shown no public intent to withdraw troops as part of any peace agreement. European allies have expressed concerns that the Trump administration might pressure Ukraine into territorial concessions, potentially undermining Kyiv's efforts to regain sovereignty.
Despite these geopolitical tensions, Kellogg's appointment is unlikely to face resistance from the Republican-controlled Senate when it convenes next year. His extensive military background and close ties to Trump have solidified his role as a trusted advisor in shaping the administration's policies on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
