Trump Transition Team Signs Key Agreement with White House
President-elect Donald Trump's transition team has signed a long-anticipated memorandum of understanding with President Joe Biden's White House, a move that facilitates crucial cooperation between the outgoing and incoming administrations. This agreement allows the Trump team access to key government offices and resources, marking an important step in the transfer of power.
Negotiations over the agreement had been delayed, as Trump's team initially resisted signing it. Talks stretched past traditional deadlines, but a resolution was reached this week, with Trump's chief of staff, Susie Wiles, announcing the deal.
"This engagement allows our intended Cabinet nominees to begin critical preparations, including the deployment of landing teams to every department and agency, and complete the orderly transition of power," Wiles stated, according to CNN.
Despite signing the White House agreement, the Trump transition team declined to sign a memorandum with the General Services Administration (GSA) and the Department of Justice, which would authorize federal funding for office space, cybersecurity, and background checks. Instead, the Trump team opted to rely on private funding to cover transition expenses.
Wiles emphasized the decision as a taxpayer-friendly approach, explaining that the team would "fund its own offices and security, saving the taxpayers money."
The Biden administration expressed concern over the lack of a GSA agreement but assured continued support for the Trump team throughout the transition.
"While we do not agree with the Trump transition team's decision to forgo signing the GSA [memo of understanding], we will follow the purpose of the Presidential Transition Act," said White House spokeswoman Saloni Sharma, according to Politico. She reiterated that the Act is designed to prevent disruptions that could "produce results detrimental to the safety and well-being of the United States and its people."
The agreement now allows Trump's team to deploy "landing teams" to federal departments and agencies, enabling them to begin preparations for the new administration's priorities and policies.
