Amazon Increases Investment in Anthropic AI by $4 Billion
Amazon announced on Friday an additional $4 billion investment in Anthropic, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup. This new funding builds on an earlier $4 billion commitment, bringing Amazon's total investment in Anthropic to $8 billion. Despite this significant support, Amazon remains a minority investor in the company.
Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI executives, is recognized as a major competitor to OpenAI. The company developed the Claude chatbot, one of the leading AI chatbots alongside OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) will serve as Anthropic's primary cloud and training partner, reinforcing their collaboration. AWS customers are already seeing benefits from this partnership, gaining early access to Anthropic's generative AI tools.
"The response from AWS customers who are developing generative AI applications powered by Anthropic in Amazon Bedrock has been remarkable," said Matt Garman, CEO of AWS. "By continuing to deploy Anthropic models in Amazon Bedrock and collaborating with Anthropic on the development of our custom Trainium chip, we'll keep pushing the boundaries of what customers can achieve with generative AI technologies."
Anthropic's co-founder and CEO, Dario Amodei, emphasized the significance of their partnership with Amazon. "The last 12 months have been a breakout year for the Claude chatbot, benefiting millions of users on Amazon Bedrock," Amodei said. "We're looking forward to working with Amazon to train and power our most advanced AI models using AWS Trainium and helping to unlock the full potential of their technology."
With this expanded collaboration, Amazon and Anthropic aim to continue advancing the capabilities and accessibility of generative AI technologies.
